Routine scaling and polishing in JB costs roughly RM 80–180 per visit, but gum-disease treatment is priced differently: deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is usually quoted per section of the mouth, and most JB clinics do not publish those prices online. In Singapore, one published private-clinic price list puts root planing at SGD 381.50–436 per quadrant and gum grafting from SGD 1,635 per tooth. We could not verify a published JB price for these specific procedures this run, so this guide shows what is confirmed, what is not, and how to get a reliable quote.

If your dentist has told you that you need "deep cleaning" or have gum disease, the sections below explain what that means, which numbers we can stand behind, and what to ask a JB clinic before you cross the Causeway.

Exchange Rate Note

JB prices are in Malaysian Ringgit (RM). As in our other price guides, we use SGD 1 = RM 3.10 for conversions. Always confirm the day's rate before you travel.

Gum Disease vs Routine Cleaning

A routine scale and polish removes plaque and tartar above the gumline and is a preventive service. Gum (periodontal) disease is different. The US National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) explains that early gum disease caused by plaque buildup can often be reversed by daily brushing and flossing, while more advanced cases need professional treatment such as "scaling and root planing", a deep cleaning of the affected teeth, and sometimes surgery. The same page lists smoking as the most significant risk factor and also names diabetes, older age and genetics.

Warning signs include red, swollen or tender gums that bleed easily, persistent bad breath, loose or sensitive teeth, and pain when chewing. The World Health Organization estimates that severe periodontal diseases affect more than 1 billion cases worldwide.

For the routine end of the spectrum, see our scaling and polishing cost guide.

What Gum Treatment Costs in Singapore (Verified)

The most detailed published figures we could fetch this run come from the Nuffield Dental Singapore price list. These are one provider's published fees, not a market average, and the list notes they are subject to GST and may vary with the number of teeth treated.

TreatmentNuffield Dental (SGD)Unit
Standard scaling & polishing140.61 – 218per session
Gum treatment (basic)76.30 – 436per quadrant
Root planing (deep cleaning)381.50 – 436per quadrant
Gum grafting (soft tissue)from 1,635per tooth

A full mouth has four quadrants, so a full deep cleaning priced per quadrant can add up quickly. Many patients need only one or two quadrants treated, which is why the dentist's diagnosis matters more than any headline price.

What Gum Treatment Costs in JB (What We Could and Could Not Verify)

Here is what is confirmed from clinic websites fetched this run:

ServiceJB ClinicPublished Price (RM)Approx. SGD
Scaling & polishingTen Dental Clinic, Taman PelangiRM 100 – 180approx. $32 – $58
Scaling package (air polishing + fluoride gel)Ten Dental Clinic, Taman PelangiRM 220approx. $71
Scaling & polishingKoh Dental, Taman AbadRM 100 – 180approx. $32 – $58

For the canonical DentalJB range for routine scaling, our price guide lists RM 80 – 150 in JB versus SGD 90 – 200 in Singapore, per routine session.

Neither clinic's website lists separate prices for deep cleaning, root planing or gum surgery, and Ten Dental directs patients to WhatsApp or phone for specialised gum treatment quotes. A third-party listing site, WhatClinic, shows Malaysia-wide periodontitis treatment "from RM 147", but the clinics on that page were in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka, Selangor and Puchong, not Johor Bahru, so we do not treat it as a JB price.

Bottom line on price: we are not publishing a JB price range for deep cleaning or gum surgery because we could not verify one. Expect it to cost less than the Singapore figures above, as scaling and most other treatments do, but get a written, per-quadrant quote before you commit.

When You Need a Periodontist

A general dentist can treat early and moderate gum disease with scaling and root planing. A periodontist is a gum specialist, usually involved for advanced disease, grafting, or surgery. DentalJB's clinic directory currently has no dedicated periodontist or gum-treatment filter. Of the first 20 of 260 clinics shown on the clinics page, none were marketed as periodontal specialists, though many offer scaling and polishing. Because specialist availability changes, ask each clinic directly whether a periodontist treats patients there and on which days.

Before booking any specialist, verify their registration.

Questions to Ask a JB Clinic Before You Go

Send these by WhatsApp with your recent X-rays or your Singapore dentist's notes:

  1. Is the price per quadrant, per tooth, or for the full mouth?
  2. How many visits will deep cleaning take, and is local anaesthetic included?
  3. Is a follow-up review included, and when?
  4. Will a specialist or a general dentist treat me?
  5. What is the price if I need surgery or grafting instead?

Because gum treatment usually needs follow-up, factor in a second trip. Our guides to getting to a JB dentist from Singapore and clinics near the checkpoint help you plan it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gum disease treatment cheaper in JB than Singapore?

Routine scaling and polishing is clearly cheaper in JB, with published clinic prices around RM 100–180 compared with SGD 140.61–218 at one Singapore provider. We could not verify JB prices for deep cleaning or gum surgery, so request a written quote for those.

How is deep cleaning for gums different from normal scaling?

Normal scaling removes plaque and tartar above the gumline, while scaling and root planing cleans deeper around the tooth roots in areas affected by gum disease. It is typically done by section of the mouth, sometimes under local anaesthetic.

Do I need to see a periodontist in JB?

Not always. A general dentist can manage early and moderate gum disease, and a periodontist is typically needed for advanced disease or surgery. Ask the clinic who will treat you, and verify their registration before treatment.

Can gum disease be reversed?

Early gum disease caused by plaque buildup can often be reversed with daily brushing and flossing, according to NIDCR. Advanced disease generally needs professional treatment and ongoing care.

How many visits does gum treatment take?

It depends on how many sections of the mouth need treatment, so confirm the visit plan and any review appointment in writing before you start.
